Track of the Day: Birds by The Shacks

Written by frtyfve Team

The Shacks were born out of high school friendship turned musical partnership. The duo's latest track 'Birds' is our Track of the Day.

Max Shrager brought Shannon Wise to a studio to lay some vocals over a track he was playing the guitar on for Leon Michels, the producer and co-founder of Big Crown Records. In one take, the project was a-go.

Their dreamy sound is affirmed by Wise’s delicate whispered vocal, with early rock and vintage soul elements. Their work sounds both retro and modern, a contradiction that can only be exemplified by their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies “This Strange Effect”, which soundtracked a recent iPhone commercial.

Inspired by sounds which pre-date them, the twenty-something duo seem to live through their music, alongside their band members.

We just want people to get excited about real music again,” says Max. “When we record we try to capture what’s happening — in our lives, things between us, something in the studio that day, just something honest. Not something pieced together and hyperreal,” they said.

With new features on New Indie Mix and Songpickr’s Best Songs playlist, The Shacks sit on over 949, 026 playlist followers (TalentAI). With such a well-crafted sound already at their disposal, the band are a force to be reckoned with.
